Academic Drawing & Painting Workshops

Our academic art workshops are designed to give students a strong foundation in traditional drawing and painting techniques in a welcoming, structured environment. Whether you are completely new to art or looking to strengthen your fundamentals, these workshops are beginner friendly and focused on clear, practical instruction.

Students will explore core academic subjects including figure drawing, portraiture, still life, observational drawing, and painting techniques. Emphasis is placed on understanding form, proportion, value, light, anatomy, and composition through direct observation and hands-on practice.

These workshops are built around traditional studio methods that have been used by artists for generations, while keeping the atmosphere approachable and encouraging for modern students. Each class focuses on developing solid technical skills, confidence, and a deeper understanding of how to see and draw accurately.

Upcoming Workshop: Portrait Painting with
the Zorn Palette

The Portrait Painting with the Zorn Palette workshop is an intensive three-day course focused on the fundamentals of portrait painting using a traditional limited colour palette. Students will reproduce portraits by the old masters, gaining valuable insight into how great painters approached colour, value, edges, and form.

Working with just Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Ivory Black, and Raw Umber, students will discover the surprising range of colours that can be achieved while avoiding the complexity of a full palette. This simplified approach allows painters to focus on the essentials of portrait painting—accurate drawing, value relationships, colour temperature, and brushwork.

This workshop is designed to be accessible to beginners while still offering valuable structure and practice for more experienced students looking to strengthen their foundation.
