Academic Programs
We are proud to offer three distinct academic programs.
Each is designed to nurture technical excellence and a deep understanding
of classical methods.
Standard Academic Program
Our Standard Academic Program provides a comprehensive foundation in both Drawing and Oil Painting. Ideal for students who wish to develop a well-rounded artistic skill set, this program begins with rigorous drawing studies before progressing to classical oil painting. Students build confidence in the fundamentals of proportion, value, and form before applying these principles through traditional painting techniques.
Academic Drawing Program
The Academic Drawing Program focuses exclusively on the art of drawing. Recommended for beginners or anyone interested in strictly drawing, it emphasizes precision, structure, and observation through a progressive series of projects. Each stage introduces new challenges that refine the student’s understanding of anatomy, perspective, and tonal rendering, forming a solid foundation for any future artistic pursuit.
Oil Painting Program
The Oil Painting Program concentrates on classical painting techniques, offering a focused study of composition, colour, and the principles of light. While some drawing experience is beneficial, it is not essential. This program is well-suited for students interested in exploring traditional oil painting methods—such as “fat over lean,” underpainting, and glazing—without the intensive drawing component.
Each program at the Ottawa Art Academy is designed to uphold the highest academic and artistic standards, providing students with structured, personalized instruction that fosters both technical skill and creative growth.
Portfolio Prep Program
Our Portfolio Preparation Program is designed to assist students in developing the necessary skills and meeting the specific portfolio requirements of their chosen post-secondary art or design programs. Whether your goal is to enter Animation, Fine Arts, Architecture (to a certain extent), or Design programs, our instructors provide expert guidance to help you understand and fulfill institutional expectations with confidence and professionalism.
While our instructors offer detailed instruction, feedback, and planning support, it is important to note that we do not create or complete portfolio pieces on behalf of students. Success in this program depends on the student’s active participation, dedication, and consistent effort both in and outside of class.
We strongly recommend that students enroll in this program at least one year prior to their intended application date. Joining the program too late may limit the time available for skill development and portfolio completion, and therefore we cannot guarantee the desired results.
This program provides a structured and supportive environment where students can refine their artistic abilities, organize their portfolio effectively, and present their creative potential to post-secondary institutions at the highest possible standard.
Abstract or modern art techniques are not included in the curriculum of our academy.
