Academic Art Programs
Ottawa Art Academy offers three core academic art programs built on classical methods and technical excellence. Each program is designed to uphold the highest academic and artistic standards. We provide students with structured, personalized instruction that fosters both technical skill and creative growth.
Standard Program
A complete foundation in drawing and oil painting. Students begin with rigorous studies in proportion, value, and form before advancing to classical painting techniques. Ideal for those seeking a balanced mastery of both disciplines.
Drawing Program
A focused study in classical drawing. This program develops accuracy, structure, and observation through progressive projects in anatomy, perspective, and tone—perfect for beginners or those devoted to drawing.
Oil Painting Program
Dedicated to traditional oil techniques including underpainting, glazing, and “fat over lean.” Emphasis is placed on composition, colour, and light. Prior drawing experience helps but isn’t required.
Portfolio Prep Program
Our Portfolio Preparation Program helps students build strong, well-crafted portfolios for entry into post-secondary art, animation, architecture, and design programs.
Students receive guided instruction in drawing and painting alongside personalized feedback to meet specific institutional requirements. For creative assignments, students develop their own ideas while we provide technical support, structure, and professional direction to help bring those ideas to life.
We recommend enrolling at least one year before your intended application date to allow time for skill development and portfolio completion. This program ensures each student presents their creative potential with confidence and craftsmanship.
Please note: our curriculum focuses on classical realism—abstract or modern art techniques are not included.
Long pose figure drawing sessions
Our Long Pose Figure Drawing sessions provide artists in Ottawa with the rare chance to study the live nude figure in sustained poses over three consecutive days. These are uninstructed sessions.
Looking for art lessons for children under 16 or other styles / mediums?
The Ottawa Art Academy caters to students over the age of 16. But our partner company, Monart, offers a wide variety of classes and workshops for kids as young as 4 years old, as well as programs for teens and adults.
